Plant response to bacterial pathogens. Overlap between innate and gene-for-gene defense response.

چکیده

The immune system’s role as defense from opportunistic microbes also necessitated the ability to distinguish between ‘‘self’’ and ‘‘non-self’’ to ensure that an immune response is not mounted against the organism’s own tissues. This discrimination is partially achieved by the recognition of an invader’s chemical motifs by host surface receptors. Consequently, potential pathogens have adapted numerous ways to overcome host immune systems while the hosts respond with new defenses. In plants, this ongoing ‘‘battle’’ against pathogens has led to two types of immune responses: an older, basal response to pathogenassociated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and a genefor-gene response specific to a pathogen. This month’s selection for High Impact examines the immune response of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) to one such PAMP and the interaction between the two immune responses. The article is ‘‘The Transcriptional Innate Immune Response to flg22. Interplay and Overlap with Avr Gene-Dependent Defense Responses and Bacterial Pathogenesis’’ by Lionel Navarro, Cyril Zipfel, Owen Rowland, Ingo Keller, Silke Robatzek, Thomas Boller, and Jonathan D.G. Jones. It appeared in our June 2004 issue in the section ‘‘Plants Interacting with Other Organisms.’’ As of September 2006, it had been cited 35 times according to Thompson ISI (Thompson ISI Web of Science, http://www.isinet.com).

Transcript analysis of some defense genes of tomato in response to host and non-host bacterial pathogens

The transcript levels of six defense genes including pathogenesis-related gene 1 (PR-1), pathogenesis-related gene 2 (PR-2), pathogenesis-related gene 5 (PR-5), lipoxygenase (LOX), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and catalase (CAT) were investigated in tomato plants inoculated with Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli as a non-host pathogen and X. euvesicatoria as a host pathogen. Activation o...

The transcriptional innate immune response to flg22. Interplay and overlap with Avr gene-dependent defense responses and bacterial pathogenesis.

Animals and plants carry recognition systems to sense bacterial flagellin. Flagellin perception in Arabidopsis involves FLS2, a Leu-rich-repeat receptor kinase. We surveyed the early transcriptional response of Arabidopsis cell cultures and seedlings within 60 min of treatment with flg22, a peptide corresponding to the most conserved domain of flagellin. Using Affymetrix microarrays, approximat...

Study of antioxidant defense genes expression profile pattern of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars in response to drought stress

Drought stress is one of the important factors that restrict crop production in the world. This study was conducted to investigate defense gene expression in response to drought stress, and also to evaluate the drought tolerance and its mechanism in rice cultivars based on randomized complete block design in two separate environments (drought stress and non-stress). The rice cultivars used incl...

Bacterial lipopolysaccharides induce defense responses associated with programmed cell death in rice cells.

PAMP (pathogen-associated molecular pattern) recognition plays an important role during the innate immune response in both plants and animals. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) derived from Gram-negative bacteria are representative of typical PAMP molecules and have been reported to induce defense-related responses, including the suppression of the hypersensitive response, the expression of defense gen...

Induced Acidic chitinase Expression and Scab-Resistant in Wheat Under Field Condition

Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum is responsible for billions of dollars in agriculture losses. The goal of the present study was evaluation the expression of acidic chitinase, one of PR proteins, in wheat defense response against different FHB induced treatments in 'Falat' as a highly susceptible and 'Sumai3' as a tolerant cultivar. These treatments contained fungi extr...
